DIY Carpet Binding | Carpet Installation Tips

Having a carpet installed can be very expensive. For individuals who have watched as a carpet was installed it does not look like a job that could not be accomplished by some who had some carpet installation tips and the time to do it. Professionals who install carpeting make this task look very simple and easy. Whether a person is installing their own carpet or wants to be knowledgeable before contracting for installation, these carpet installation tips may help.

Most home improvement stores offer workshops in carpet installation. They contract with a professional installer who comes in with all of the tools and equipment that is required for carpet installation and works with a group to teach them how to do the job by themselves. In most cases these individuals will also give members of the group their card so if there are questions or problems during the installation process it is possible to call the professional for more carpet installation tips.

Carpet installation is considered a major DIY project. As with any major project the best way to start with with something small. If there is a room available that will be empty for the period of time required and is not in an area where mistakes are easily visible, it will be a great room to try carpet installation. All of the same tools and equipment will be required to install carpet in a small room. But if it becomes too big of a job, or too complicated, it will not require an emergency call to a professional to fix.

Making a list of the tools, equipment, and accessories that will be needed is vital for carpet installation. Some of the equipment that is used is very expensive but available for rent from a home improvement store. One of the best carpet installation tips is to set a price that will be spent on a tool and if the tool is more expensive then rent it. There are many tools that are used exclusively for carpet installation. Spending the money on these tools for a one-time project can be very expensive and there will not be a cost savings by installing the carpet yourself.

Most people do not really pay attention to carpet tack strips, but these are very important accessories that will make a carpet strong, durable and long lasting or a mess that has ripples throughout. These strips come in different widths for a reason. When attending the workshop the best carpet installation tips that one can receive is to ask a lot of questions. One does not want to get a 7/8" carpet tack strip for a thick wool shag carpet. It may look okay when installed, but the carpet will quickly tear away from the carpet tack strip.

Carpeting becomes frayed when it is handled and will begin to unravel. This does not mean the carpet is worth less than what was paid for it or is in some way defective. It is just the way carpeting is. Carpet installation tips include getting latex seam binding and running a bead around every edge of the carpeting right after unrolling it. This protects the carpet from developing snags and tears when it is attached to the carpet tack strip.

Not many people think about the surface that they are installing a carpet on. If it is flat and clean that is usually the extent of the thought process. However when looking at carpet installation tips it is good to notice that cement board underlayment plays a huge role in how long the padding and carpet will last when it is installed over tile, cement, or wood. The benefit of using cement board underlayment on wood is that a wood floor is not damaged like it is when carpet pad is laid directly on the wood. The cement board underlayment protects the pad from moisture and will also protect it from getting mold and mildew if the floor under the underlayment gets damp or sweats.

These few carpet installation tips barely touch the surface of what an individual needs to know to successfully install their own carpet. Taking a workshop and asking lots of questions will help an individual to be successful and get their installation completed a lot faster.

  1. Thanks for all the help! It took us forever to finally pick a carpet that we liked and we ended up going with one that was way out of our price range. To make up for it we plan on just laying it ourselves instead of hiring Cleveland carpet installers. Thanks for the advice, we will be using it!
