The Types of Hazardos Training Courses

OSHA's Hazpower training is for protecting workers and first responders who are likely to come into contact with hazardous and dangerous substances while performing their jobs. These training programs teach employees on how to identify, deal with and avoid hazardous situations. Courses like these are either offered online or in on site classrooms. Those employers who choose to train their workers online have the responsibility of providing them with substantial amounts of supervised field training too.

The Hazpower or Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training is structured for five distinct groups of employees. All those workers who come into contact with any type of hazardous materials and waste should receive Hazpower training. This includes all those employees who are involved in clean up operations that are carried out at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites; corrective and clean up operations that are covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976; clean up operations at hazardous sites carried out voluntarily; operations that involve handling, storage and disposal of hazardous waste; and emergency response operations that involve the risk of hazardous substance release. This training should also be received by first responders in hospitals and workers who have to perform operations at sites where hazardous waste is present.

The Hazpower 40 hour training course includes 40 hours of Hazpower classroom and hands on training as per the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. All the workers are supposed to complete the training course and have three days of supervised training on the work site. In order to pass the course, the trainees are required to obtain a score minimum 70 on all the quizzes and the final exam. Toxicology, hazardous chemical awareness, safety analysis, material sampling are some of the topics covered by this course.

24 hour Hazpower training courses are required for all those workers who visit Hazardous work sites. These courses cover a wide number of topics ranging from recognizing hazardous waste to preventive and protective measures. The complete course along with a one day hands on supervised field experience is required as per the OSHA standards.

All those who have received the Hazpower certification also have to take up the refresher training courses annually. These are 8 hour courses and have to be compulsorily taken up by employees. Failure to do so will cause the employee to take the initial Hazpower training again. If there is a delay, it should be noted in a file.

  1. Hazwoper and OSHA online training programs has really been one of the tools in helping to decrease the amount of injuries, accidents and fatalities in a lot of workplaces year to year but employer negligence still is one of the reasons for those accidents since most of them does not obey rules and regulations and guidelines for safety.
